Regular Board of Education Meeting – January 25, 2021

 

The regular meeting of the Pavilion Central School District Board of Education was called to order at 7:00 PM by Board President Marirose Ethington.

Board Members present: Marirose Ethington, Jeff Finch, Margaret Gaston (7:03 PM), Becky Dziekan (7:01 PM), Kevin Stefan, Callin Ayers-Tillotson, and Chris Jeffres (7:01 PM)

 

Board Members Absent:

 

Others Present: Sheila Eigenbrod, Jon Wilson, Charles Martelle, Stacey Tallon, Mary Kate Hoffman, Donald Childs, and Mary Jo Pahl

 

Others Absent:

 

Six (6) guests were present as per the list of attendees received by GVBOCES.

 

Jeff Finch led the Pledge of Allegiance

 

**        Moved by Jeff Finch; seconded by Chris Jeffres to approve agenda with additions carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

**        Moved by Jeff Finch; seconded by Kevin Stefan to approve all items in the consent grouping - Minutes: Regular BOE minutes of 1/11/2021; CSE, Sub-CSE, CPSE and 504 minutes of 12/21/2020; 1/1/2021; 1/12/2021; 1/13/2021; 1/20/2021; and 1/21/2021; Appropriation and Budget Status Reports for A, C & F funds as of December 2020 and Treasurer’s Reports as of December 2020; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

BUSINESS:

 

1.               Fall Coaching Updates:

**        Mr. Sattora updated the Board on the fall 2020 Cross Country season as noted below:

 

Boys team only had 5 boys this year but were very successful with a 13-3 overall record, 11-1 Division record and finished 2nd in our Division.  Due to COVID there was not any Invitational’s for the kids.  We were able to hold Sectional where the Boys placed 5th out of 14 schools.  Eli VanBuren was my top runner placing 14th 

 

The Girls team had 7 runners this year.  They were also successful with 9-7 overall record and 9-3 in their Division placing 3rd.  The High light of the season was Alexa Wolcott Won the Class D Sectional race for the second time.  She was also a repeat Sectional for the All Greater Rochester Team and was also selected 1st Team All Section 5 team which is a great honor.

 

 

**        Mr. Roth updated the Board on the fall 2020 Boys Soccer season as noted below:

 

JV Boys Soccer 5-1-3

 

Varsity boys Soccer

 

8-6-1

Hosted a sectional game

Won 2 sectional Games

Lost in the Semi Finals to Holley

Beat the #2 seed in sectionals, Avon 1-0

 

14 Pavilion Boys

4 York Boys

 

Great group of guys who had a lot of fun and enjoyment during the season.  Parents and fans at our school and all schools were great and respectful of all the COVID restrictions.  

 

**        Mr. Mapes updated the Board on the fall 2020 Girls Soccer season as noted below:

           

                        Pavilion Girls Soccer - End of Season BOE Meeting

 

Girls Varsity Soccer

- Final record 3-11-0

- Early season highlight was a 6-0 Senior Night win against Mt. Morris

- 1st round Sectional Win against Naples 2-0

- Past few seasons we had trouble scoring goals, this year we scored goals in all but 3 games

- Only team in our league to score on Geneseo (eventual Class C2 Sectional Champion, only allowed 3 goals all year)

- Kali Markek was the team leader in scoring this season with 8 goals, 3 assists, 19 pts.  which was good for 5th in the division 

- Kali was named Livingston Conference League All-Star and recognized as an Exceptional Senior 

- Had 4 volleyball girls join the team this season and all contributed to the team. 

- 2 standouts (volleyball girls) were Karlee Zinkevich who contributed 3 goals, 1 assist, 7 pts. and Lauren Kingsley played all 1060 minutes in the net for us this year and finished the season with 164 saves and 2 shutouts. 

- Younger players who showed great development over the course of the season were Sophomore Erika Palmer and Freshman Blake Holthaus.  Both finished the season playing all 80 minutes as Defenders and Outside Midfielders. 

 

Girls Mod-A Soccer (7th - 9th grade)

- Had a combined team with York this year 

- Season record was 7-0-1

- The two leading goal scorers were both Pavilion players.  8th graders Ella Tillotson and Kylie Conway.

- 8th grader Ella Conway led the way in net for the team

- These girls have been playing together for a number of years and continue to attend development camps every summer.  

- Coach Mapes is looking forward to working with them in the years to come 

 

 

**        Mr. Sattora updated the board with the below information:

                       

On Friday Jan 22nd Governor Cuomo announced that all "High Risk Sports" can resume starting Feb 1st pending approval by local Department of Health.  Those sports include Basketball, Wrestling, Volleyball and Competitive Cheerleading.  Section 5 and the LCAA will be working on implementing schedules for those sports.

 

**        Each coach answered questions on each of the above items as asked during each update; the Board thanked them for the updates. No action required.

 

2.               Superintendent Update:

**        Mrs. Hoffman thanked Mr. Sattora and the coaches for the updates the just proved to the Board and spoke about the challenges that will have to be met in order to get the sports teams going, but indicated that the school will accomplish this in order to get the sports going for our students. 

 

**        Mrs. Hoffman reminded the Board of the upcoming Legislative breakfast that will be held this Saturday January 30, 2021.

 

**        Mrs. Hoffman informed the Board about the recent election of Beth Slocum, one of our Spanish teachers to the position of Director of the Northeast Conference of Foreign Language Teachers.  This is quite an accomplishment and will be an opportunity for her to bring some great professional development to our other foreign language teachers.

 

**        Mrs. Hoffman answered questions on each of the above items as asked during each update; the Board thanked her for the updates. No action required.

 

 3.        Admin Updates:

**       Dr. Eigenbrod updated the Board about the success in bringing more students back to school four days a week.  She indicated that they are still working on this and will bring back more updates at future meetings as needed.

 

**       Dr. Eigenbrod informed the Board that the students are working on the details for the upcoming spirit week which will be held the week of February 11, 2021.  She indicated that the students have some pretty unique ideas for the themes of each day for spirit week.

 

**       Dr. Eigenbrod indicated that the parent teacher conferences that will be held on February 11, 2021, from 12:30 to 5:30 PM will all be held virtually this year due to the necessary social distancing which must be maintained.

 

**        Dr. Eigenbrod spoke regarding the Breakfast of Champions stating that this is still being planned, and that she would fill them in with full details once finalized.

 

**        Dr. Eigenbrod answered questions on each of the above items as they were asked during each update, the Board thanked her for the updates. No action required.

 

**        Mr. Martelle did not have an update this week.

 

**        Mr. Wilson addressed the Board regarding the changes that are being made to the pick-up times in the elementary building, which the change has helped to add some additional instruction time to each students schedule. 

 

**        Mr.Wilson informed the Board that that at the beginning of the school year there were 29 remote students, but that the number of remote learners is now at ten, which is great news!!

 

**        Mr. Wilson answered questions on each of the above items as they were asked during each update, the Board thanked him for the updates. No action required.

 

**        Ms. Tallon did not have an update this week.

 

**        Mr. Childs addressed the Board with a brief review of the State Aid runs and how they will impact our budget planning process.  He indicated that we will be starting the budget slightly lower than we had in the past year, but due to retirees that we had been unaware of during the prior budget planning process, we should be in decent shape.  However he agreed with Jeff Finch when he mentioned that he thought that the last time there was a recession the impact did not actually hit the school until two or three years after the fact, so he wanted all Board members to keep that in mind while planning the budget for the upcoming years.    He answered questions and the Board thanked him for his update.  No action required. 

 

**        Marirose Ethington thanked the Superintendent and Administrators for the updates.

 

4.         Resignation:

**        Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Peg Gaston to accept the resignation of Jim Sattora from the position of Athletic Director effective June 25, 2021; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

5.         Appointments:

**        Moved by Cal Ayers-Tillotson, seconded by Chris Jeffres, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, to appoint Matt Roth to the position of Athletic Director effective July 1, 2021 at the current contractual starting salary of $7,000.00; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

**        Moved by Peg Gaston, seconded by Cal Ayers-Tillotson, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, to approve the substitute teaching applications as presented for Gabriella Loewer, Isabella Wilder, and Caitlynne Marczyk; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

6.         Driver Education:

**        Mr. Childs addressed the Board regarding a proposed change to the spring driver education program to a suggested modified program due to social distancing guidelines.  Due to these guidelines the proposed program will only provide the classroom instruction portion of the program, and the parents sign an agreement to provide the in vehicle instruction for the necessary hours in order to meet the needs of the program and reap the benefits this program provides.

 

**        Moved by Jeff Finch, seconded by Peg Gaston to approve the recommended change in costs for the modified Spring Driver Education program as recommended.  The change in cost will decrease the current cost for the full program of $200.00 per student to $125.00 per student; carried unanimously; (7 votes).

 

 

 

7.         Approved Transportation agreement with Wyoming CSD:

**        Moved by Becky Dziekan, seconded by Chris Jeffres to approve the transportation agreement as presented by Mr. Childs between Pavilion CSD and Wyoming CSD for the 2020-2021 school year at no cost to the District; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

 

 

INFORMATION:  

1.      Monday February 8 and 22, 2021 BOE meeting dates – anticipated to be virtual.

**        Moved by Kevin Dziekan, seconded by Peg Gaston to enter executive session for a personnel matter at 8:03 PM; carried unanimously (7 votes).

 

**        Moved by Chris Jeffres, seconded by Cal Ayers-Tillotson to return to regular session at 8:55 PM; carried unanimously (7 votes).
